SFU signs Sophie Lachapelle as part of the 2020 recruiting class

BURNABY, BC – Simon Fraser University volleyball head coach Gina Schmidt announced the signing of three student-athletes to the class of 2020. Davida Hill, Sophie Lachapelle, and Kohl Peters have signed National Letters of Intent to join Canada’s NCAA team next season.

While 2020 has provided the world with many unprecedented challenges, we feel very fortunate to have such a talented and well-rounded group joining us this fall. Sophie Lachapelle – Kelowna, BC / Kelowna Secondary School
Position: Outside Hitter
Height: 6’0″
Club Team: Junior Heat
Schmidt: “Sophie is a great fit for SFU both athletically and academically. As another multi-sport athlete, she brings a great all-around skill set to the court and demonstrates an incredible ability to perform in pressure situations. Sophie is not only a great volleyball player but an excellent student and teammate as well.”

As an outside hitter who specializes on the right side, Sophie is an accomplished player who boasts a number of accomplishments. While playing for her high school team at Kelowna Secondary School, she won a gold medal at the AAAA Senior Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships in both 2018 and 2019. Sophie was also named a Provincial First-Team All-Star this past season in 2019. Her club team, the Junior Heat also proves to be a talented team as Sophie and eight other of her teammates will be moving on to play at the collegiate level.

Outside of volleyball, Sophie is a forward on her basketball team and also volunteers and lifeguards at her local recreation center. The academically gifted athlete hopes to pursue a degree in sustainable energy engineering.
